In a race of 600 meters, A can beat B by 60 meters and in a race of 500 meters; B can beat C by 50 meters. By what number of meters will A beat C in a race of 400 meters?

OPTIONS

  • 76 meters.
  • 89 meters.
  • 71 meters.
  • 84 meters.

76 Meters

Explanation:

Assume that A can finish the race of 600 meters in 1 min (60 secs),
The speed of A = 600 meters/ 60 secs = 10 m/ sec
Distance covered by B in 60 secs compared to A= 600 – 60 = 540 m
The speed of B = 540/60 = 9 m/ sec

In 500 Meter race
Time for B to finish 500 meters = 500 meters /9 meters = 55.56 sec
Distance covered by C in 55.56 secs compared to B = 500 – 50 = 450 meters
The speed of C = 540/55.56 = 8.1m/ sec

In 400 Meters race
Time required for A to finish 400 meters = 400 meters/ 10 = 40 secs
Distance C can covered in 40 secs compared to A = 8.1 meters * 40 secs = 324 meters

The difference is 400-324 = 76 Meters
