Home » Certification Exams Questions » CSM - Certified Scrum Master » A member of a Scrum team does not participate in the Scrum Planning and consider it as a waste of time. What should the Scrum Master do first?

Answer:

Meet Individually to Address the Concern.

Explanation:

It is an unfortunate situation if any member of the Scrum Team has any sort of disagreement with team and Scrum Planning. In this case, if the member takes his/her grievance to the next level and decides not to attend the Scrum Planning, then it is the responsibility of the Scrum Master to set up a one-on-one meeting with the member and address his/her concern.

  • The proper working of a Scrum team is solely based on the cooperation of each member and it will adversely affect the team even if any one member of the team is uncomfortable working in the team and finds it difficult to understand the development process. In this situation, Scrum Master is supposed to take action as ignoring such behavior can affect the team’s capability of  functioning productively.
  • As a first step, the Scrum Master might address the team member individually and discuss the concerns of the person. Perhaps the member just needs coaching or a longer training period to fix the problem and thereby change his/her attitude.
  • As a second step, the entire team can extend their help to the member and could take it up in one or more retrospectives.  If the problem still persists, a detailed meeting in the presence of his/her manager might help to solve the issue.
  • Changing the member who still feels uncomfortable with continuing in the team should be transferred to a Kanban team, non-agile team, which might not push the member out of his/her comfort zone.
