This is the most common question every candidate has to face, despite you are fresher or experienced. This may look very common, but it is where you put the foundation for the rest of the interview session. As is the foundation so is the built up. Anticipated that the initial follow up questions from the interviewer will be based on the content of your introduction. So you must be prepared enough to answer any questions that may arise from the introduction of yourself. 

Start with an utmost easy and confident tone. Make sure that you don’t produce some scripted response. It should sound very much personalised to you. End of the day you are not speaking to a humanoid. 

What should be the content?

Of course, it should speak about yourself, but make sure that you connect things to the requirement of the title you have applied for. For example, if you are applying for a title as mobile application developer, your self introduction must say something such as your interest in mobile application, application development projects you have done, programming languages you know which helps in mobile application development etc.

Example 1 → Fresher

  • Good day/ morning/ afternoon/ evening sir/ ma’am.
  • I would be really happy to introduce myself. 
  • My name is <name>.
  • I’m born and raised in <birth place>.
  • I have done my bachelor/masters degree in <subject> from <name of the university/ school/ college> with an aggregate of <score in percentage>.
  • I have also done certification in <course/courses> from <certification authority>.
  • My family consists of <numbers> members. My father is a <occupation> and my mother is a <occupation/ housewife/ homemaker>
  • I have a very good knowledge base in programming languages such as <programming languages required for the title you are applied for, for example, Java, Objective C, C++>
  • I’m very much interested in <type of job you are applied for, for ex, mobile application development> because <reason for your choice, for example, I see a bright future as a mobile application developer>
  • I have done some academic projects in <relevant skills that is needed for the title>
  • My strengths are: I’m optimistic, adaptive, hard working etc.
  • My weaknesses are: <do not some weakness that directly disqualifies you>, I easily fall into the sentiments of the people who are close to me etc.
  • I know English, Spanish and have limited skills in French.
  • Finally, my hobbies are listening to music, travelling, reading etc.
  • That’s all about me in brief, thank you so much for giving me this opportunity to introduce myself.

Example 2 → Experienced

The experienced candidates can have all of the above or few of the above. However, the interviewer would be more interested to know about your past employment and work experience. Hence please add the following to the introduction.

  • Soon after my studies, I joined <name of the company> as <title of the job> in <year>. I worked there for <x years and months>. My responsibilities include <the things you were doing at the x company>. (If you had a promotion) I started my career as a Jr. Developer, and soon I’m promoted as the Sr. Developers and then as the Team Leader. During my tenure with this company, I was the part of the X number of projects (if relevant to the title you are currently applied for>. (If you have received any kind of awards or recognitions) As an appreciation to my performance, I have been selected as the best performer of the year etc.
